Biography

Jay Wallace was born in Provo, Utah in 1973 and raised on a small apple and cherry orchard in Orem, Utah. Wallace visited many historical sites during his formative years, which helped him grow a love for history. Jay undertook architecture and drafting courses and frequently adds architectural elements in his work.

Jay experienced a 15 year career in commercial printing as a desktop publisher, before turning to the fine art of printmaking. In 2010 Jay received a BFA in Design and Illustration with a Printmaking emphasis at Utah Valley University. He was offered a graduate teaching assistantship at the University of South Dakota, and received his MFA in Printmaking in 2013. Jay served multiple years as an assistant for the nationally recognized Frogman’s printmaking workshops, and his work has been published in several print and online publications.

Jay merges digital/mixed media with his love of traditional intaglio methods, often layering prints with digital transfers, serigraphy, photogravure and oil painting. Jay is currently working/researching a historical project called the Forgotten, which is a three part hand bound intaglio book art series that tells stories which convey themes of the enigmatic, reprehensible, and the unregarded, and provides awareness of places and people. Wallace actively exhibits nationally and internationally, and has earned various awards in juried competitions, including a recent solo exhibition featured at the MAPC National Printmaking Conference in Detroit.

Jay currently resides in Saint Joseph, Missouri with his wife and five children. In the recent past, he has worked at a museum fossil restoration and mounting at a local Paleontology lab. He enjoys keeping current with the latest processes in printmaking, discovering new places, spending time outdoors, and building things.
